Our Story
About Phoenix Kenpo
More than martial arts - we teach martial science in a family atmosphere.
Our Philosophy
Martial Science, Not Just Martial Arts
At Phoenix Kenpo Martial Arts, we believe there's a difference between teaching martial arts and teaching martial science. The difference is that we strive to give you the reasoning and history behind everything we teach.
You will not only learn self-defense techniques, you will learn terminology in both Japanese and English, cultural history, and the lineage of the arts. We believe in understanding the "why" behind every technique, not just the "how."
Our school is built on a family atmosphere where everyone supports each other's journey. Whether you're 3 or 63, you'll find a welcoming community here that encourages growth, discipline, and mutual respect.
Meet Your Instructor
Shihan Gary
Over 30+ years of training, competing, and studying the martial arts.
Shihan Gary has dedicated his life to the martial arts, working with numerous world-renowned masters in multiple styles throughout his career. His extensive training has given him a deep understanding of various martial arts disciplines and their applications.
His last mentor was the nationally recognized "Mother of Kenpo" - Soke Nancy Cerio. Under her guidance, he refined his skills in Nick Cerio's Kenpo and developed his teaching philosophy.
Today, Shihan Gary continues his training under many nationally recognized instructors to bring a full, broad spectrum of knowledge to his students. His goal is not just to teach techniques, but to help each student understand the science behind the art.
Our Heritage
Nick Cerio's Kenpo Lineage
Carrying forward a proud tradition of martial excellence.
Phoenix Kenpo Martial Arts teaches Nick Cerio's Kenpo. This style combines traditional Kenpo techniques with practical self-defense applications, creating a comprehensive martial arts system.
Our lineage traces directly through Soke Nancy Cerio, who continued her husband's legacy and became known as the "Mother of Kenpo." This direct connection ensures that our students receive authentic, traditional instruction passed down through generations of masters.
What We Teach
Our 6 Core Principles
These principles guide everything we do, both in the dojo and in life.
Respect
Respect for yourself, your instructors, your fellow students, and the art itself. This is the foundation of all martial arts training.
Self-Discipline
The ability to control your actions, emotions, and impulses. Self-discipline is what separates those who achieve their goals from those who don't.
Focus
Concentration and attention to detail in everything you do. Focus allows you to learn faster, perform better, and achieve more.
Confidence
Belief in your abilities that comes from training and preparation. True confidence is earned through dedicated practice.
Safety
Awareness of your surroundings and the ability to protect yourself and others. Safety is the practical application of all martial arts training.
Leadership
The ability to guide, inspire, and help others. As students advance, they learn to mentor younger students and give back to the community.
